Japan’s kiln towns have fired pottery for centuries. The pots we choose are made the way they always have been — slowly, by hand, with respect for the flame. Here is how a fine bonsai vessel is born.
01 · 土 The Clay
Iron earth, rested a season
The clay is dug from the hills of Japan’s old kiln towns — often dense with iron, which gives the fired pot its warm, mineral depth. Before a potter ever touches it, it is wedged and left to mature, so it moves willingly on the wheel.

02 · 水 The Form
Thrown, trimmed, judged by eye
Each pot is thrown or slab-built, then trimmed to its final wall thickness while leather-hard. The lip, the feet, the drainage — all are cut by hand. A maker’s stamp is pressed into the foot before it dries.

03 · 火 The Fire
Past 1,200°C, and patient
The kiln is brought up slowly over many hours. In wood firing, drifting ash settles on the surface and melts into a natural glaze no two pots share. Unglazed pieces emerge in deep earth tones — 朱泥, 黒泥, the colours of the fired earth itself.

04 · 時 The Inspection
Stamped, rested, sent on its way
Every vessel is checked for ring, balance, and true footing before it earns its place in the collection. Then it is photographed, catalogued, and listed — ready to cross the ocean and begin a far longer life on a collector’s bench.
